- The Scuba Diver's Mindset
The Undersea by The Dysania Concept (2016) Submerging yourself into an unknown world, relying on your equipment to explore the wonders of the ocean - that’s the definition of a Scuba Diver. The unattainability and beauty of the undersea world make Scuba Divers hungry to discover, explore and learn about what lies in the ocean’s depths. However, to dive into the sea and adventure into the unknown, Scuba Divers rely on a specific mindset. Hence, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Scuba Divers have that allow them to venture into the unknown with confidence and commitment. As Jacques Cousteau said, “The reason I love the sea I cannot explain - it’s physical. When you dive, you begin to feel like an angel. It’s a liberation of your weight.” 1. Spatial Awareness Scuba Divers rely on their spatial awareness to comprehend their surroundings. Spatial awareness is the ability to know what surrounds you and where your body is positioned within that zone. Therefore, it is crucial to Scuba Divers as it permits them to organise their mind and understand what is far, close and too close. Their spatial awareness enables them to position themselves in the best place to experience the beauty in front of their eyes and remain out of danger. Similarly, we must always know what surrounds us and where we stand within that same zone. Recognising where your body and mind are will help you enormously when facing any challenge or situation, as you’ll be able to know not only where you stand but where to move to maximise the experience. 2. Communication Scuba Divers depend on their communication skills to stay safe. Talking in the ocean is impossible, especially if you breathe through an oxygen tank. Thus, Scuba Divers depend on their communication system based on hand signs. Not knowing how to communicate with your underwater partners can put you and others in an unsafe situation, which can stem from dangerous wildlife, equipment issues or mental struggles. Therefore, Scuba Divers must study and learn to communicate efficiently underwater to ensure their safety. So, when working with people or in a situation relevant to people, remember always to communicate efficiently. Most of the problems we face every day are born from a lack of communication, so let’s fix that! 3. Respect Scuba Divers must be respectful to ensure a rewarding experience. The ocean is not human territory. If it were our territory, breathing and speaking would be possible. Therefore, Scuba Divers must respect their surroundings to guarantee a rewarding experience and protect the ocean’s wildlife. Scuba Divers must never leave any residues that don’t belong in the sea or the animal’s home. Scuba Divers mustn’t touch delicate flora, like corals, as it can hurt them beyond repair. And Scuba Divers must respect all animals in their way for their safety and the animal’s peace. Now, how is this relevant to you? When being in unknown territories, such as a new job, country or daily situation, respect your surroundings and those with you. Understand the rules of this new environment and accept them. Scuba Divers are a great example of how to behave and respond to unknown territories we may encounter in life. When facing these new territories, we must know our surroundings and where we stand. We must communicate appropriately with our team and anyone relevant to the scenario. And most importantly, we must always respect the unknown and everything that comes with it. Both a fish, a shark and a coral deserve equal respect, and following that recipe, we’ll always be successful when facing the unknown. So, we invite you to adopt The Scuba Diver’s Mindset as we face the challenges life puts in our way, along with the unknown territories and situations it puts us in. - The Sailor's Mindset
Sailing in Portobello Beach by The Dysania Concept (2022) The oldest-known remains of a watercraft stem from around 7,000 years ago, and some evidence suggests humans have been sailing even before then. As a method of exploration, fishing or entertainment, sailing has always been part of our history and, consequently, Sailors too. Nowadays, recreational sailing has endless varieties, including sunfish, kitesurf and windsurf. Nevertheless, all Sailors rely on a similar skillset to excel. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the different qualities, virtues and skills Sailors need to explore the endless ocean and, consequently, themselves. As E.E. Cummings explained, “For whatever we lose (like you or me), it’s always our self we find in the sea.” 1. Intuition Sailors rely on their intuition to build their journey. The ocean is no man’s land. The ocean is unexpected. The ocean is unpredictable. Therefore, Sailors can’t expect to know the exact path they’ll take from point A to point B before getting in the water. So, they must rely on their intuition and instinct to build their way when sailing. However, Sailors first worked with reason, eventually building their intuition. And this unconscious reason grew as they learned the rules and personality of the ocean, finally letting experience drive their mind. Similarly, we must trust ourselves, our minds and our ideas as we venture into the unknown, looking for our wanted destination. 2. Calmness Sailors must be calm to face the unexpected. As mentioned, the ocean is no man’s land, bringing unknown conditions occasionally. Technology does allow humans to know wind velocity, tide levels and wave size. However, when a Sailor is in the ocean, experiencing those conditions, they are aware drastic shifts in wind speed can occur almost instantaneously. Thus, they must remain calm and control their mind and body. Remaining calm allows them to be in charge of the situation, permitting their intuition to kick in and adapt to whatever hardship they may face. So, when you feel you are in unknown waters, stay calm. Breathe in, and breathe out. Remain in control of your mind and body, and don’t let these unknown conditions take control of you. Doing this will ensure that you excel in your path towards your objective as you adapt and keep going, always. 3. Preparedness Sailors depend on their preparedness to ensure success. Due to the ocean’s unpredictability, a Sailor is always prepared for any possible situation. Either equipped with the right tools or having the correct knowledge, they always have what any situation might demand. That preparedness permits them to feel confident and calm in challenging circumstances and their ability to face hardship and succeed. Hence, we must be prepared for all scenarios too. Understanding the strategies we will implement, knowing possible risks and preparing to face them will only set us up for success. Sailors have unique minds. Their minds are shaped to be ready and face the unexpected in all situations. And to do so, they rely on their instinct, built from experience. Sailors remain calm when the case is at its most challenging, offering a clear mind to evaluate and take action. And their preparedness always has them set up for success, as they are ready for any incoming challenges. So, we invite you to adopt The Sailor’s Mindset as we embark on our journeys towards our destination. Trust your mind, remain calm and be prepared. - The Philosopher's Mindset
The Temple of Hera in The Valley of Temples, Agrigento by The Dysania Concept (2022) Philosophers have existed among us since the 7th Century BC, and through their work, they have helped us bring sense to many aspects of life. The term Philosopher stems from Ancient Greece, which means “lover of wisdom,” as they live and work in search of answers, or truths, to different aspects of life. To find these, they rely on past knowledge and questions about life, values, mind, language and more. Nevertheless, to be a Philosopher, either professionally or as a way of life, we need a specific mindset. Therefore, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the different qualities, virtues and skills Philosophers need to excel in their search for some of the biggest questions humanity has and how you can implement these in your life. As Danish Philosopher Søren Kierkegaard said, “Life must be understood backwards. But must be lived forward.” 1. Wonder Philosophers must wonder to navigate the world in search of answers. As they develop their mind, hoping to digest and answer their questions, Philosophers have to observe, admire and appreciate the beauty of the world they live in, hoping for inspiration in their quests. Philosophers constantly feel amazed by the unfamiliar, the beautiful and the remarkable. Their will to keep exploring and feel astonished by their discoveries permits them to evolve their mind as they synchronise their thoughts and ideas with the knowledge they obtain from the world surrounding them. Similarly, we must never stop exploring and feeling amazed and appreciative of our discoveries. The only way to find a path towards an idea or a goal is to understand where you stand and what surrounds you. So go ahead and wonder about the everyday things you see, hear, smell, touch, taste and feel. 2. Open-Minded Philosophers depend on their open-mindedness to critically discuss topics of interest and shape their ideas. In Philosophy, there are different approaches to understanding and developing answers. These Schools of Thought stem from different periods and Philosophers who disrupted the way of thinking at that time. Some major Schools of Thought are Academic Skepticism, Cynicism or Stoicism. Thus, for Philosophers to achieve the answer they are looking for, they must be open-minded to discuss their findings with different Philosophers who belong to other Schools of Thought. More importantly, they must be able to analyse their ideas through different perspectives to cover all possible resolutions. Therefore, when analysing an idea, a strategy or a goal, be open-minded to people’s constructive criticism and other methods of pursuit. 3. Intellectual Independence Philosophers rely on their intellectual independence to develop their thought patterns and conclusions. Even though Philosophers should be open-minded when discussing ideas and thoughts, they count on their intellectual independence to be autonomous when concluding their research. A Philosopher’s intellectual independence permits them to engage freely in critical discussions and remain true to themselves, remembering their mind belongs to themselves and not to a shared pool of individuals. Thus, when discussing your ideas, thoughts or goals with others, listen to their constructive criticism and feedback, but remain intellectually independent as you build your mind. A Philosopher’s primary tool is their mind and the qualities which shape it to research, understand and answer the questions that dwell within them. Therefore, a Philosopher must always wonder about their physical and mental surroundings. A Philosopher must always remain open-minded to counterarguments and alternative Schools of Thought. Nevertheless, they must always remain intellectually independent, informing themselves with different views and perspectives but deciding the most appropriate answer to their question independently. So, we invite you to adopt The Philosopher’s Mindset as we chase the answers we are currently pursuing and the upcoming ideas and goals that will grow within you. - The Environmentalist's Mindset
Earth by The Dysania Concept (2022) Protecting and defending the natural environment. Fighting for a sustainable and responsible way of living. Sharing concern but hope about our planet with all of us. These are some of the responsibilities Environmentalists have, as they dedicate their mind, energy and time to understanding, sharing, and ultimately, saving planet Earth. However, Environmentalists tend to have a specific character to achieve their goals successfully. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Environmentalists have that make them capable of fighting for our planet’s health. As Albert Einstein explained simply, “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” 1. Inquisitive Environmentalists rely on their inquisitiveness to learn about planet Earth and its conflicts. To fight and protect someone or something, one must have an interest or, even better, passion, and that passion often leads to the need to learn about the subject, hence why Environmentalists are incredibly inquisitive, as they attempt to comprehend every aspect of our planet’s nature by asking questions, being curious and researching. And this inquisitiveness allows them to understand better how to fulfil their goals. Therefore, as Environmentalists do, when facing a goal, especially a long-term or grand goal, be inquisitive. Allow your passion to spark your curiosity, leading you to endless knowledge as you learn tools and strategies to get there. 2. Communication Environmentalists count on their communication skills to share knowledge and solutions. Their inquisitiveness helps them learn and strategise solutions, so they must have excellent communication skills to make them known. The mission of Environmentalists is to research, learn and propose plans. However, to be successful, they usually require everyone’s participation. Thus, Environmentalists must communicate their ideas efficiently to spark action from theory. Similarly, we must communicate our ideas efficiently, especially when working with a team. To do so, we need a good strategy, as a good idea never appropriately communicated is as useful as not having the idea. 3. Relentless Environmentalists must be relentless when fighting against today’s world. As we might be able to recognise, the world we live in has significantly changed in the last century. Technology has developed, energy sources have changed and leadership too. Therefore, for Environmentalists to be successful in their missions, they must be relentless against all the changes they face: changes in politics, consumption, waste levels, and more. So, whenever chasing a goal, we must be determined and refuse to give up despite adversity and changes. We must be relentless against challenges and hardship, as Environmentalists are when fighting for our home. Environmentalists live with a weight on their shoulders. And this weight comes from the sense of responsibility they feel towards protecting, saving and restoring our planet. However, despite the discouragement that weight might create, they remain inquisitive. Environmentalists remain patient when communicating their ideas efficiently as they try to help people understand how to make a difference. And most importantly, they are relentless against anything thrown their way. Therefore, we invite you to adopt The Environmentalist’s Mindset as we chase our goals to create an impact and a change, without mattering if it’s in our life, our family’s life or the world’s life. - The Surfer's Mindset
A Surfing Family by The Dysania Concept (2018) Searching is possibly the most basic definition of surfing. All Surfers live in search of the best wave. They search as many beaches as possible, the most suitable board and the finest surf party. And all this search is to experience the best seconds of their life as they ride that wave. However, this is easier said than done, as even when they find that wave, they must get in the ocean, fight through the impact zone and ride it. Thus, Surfers rely on a specific mindset to embark on and fulfil this journey. So, to uncover it, we invite you to read this edition of The Mindsets, where we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Surfers have that help them find this golden experience. As Bethany Hamilton said, “Life is a lot like surfing. When you get caught in the impact zone, you’ve just got to get back up because you never know what may be over the next wave.” 1. Risk-Taker Surfers must be risk-takers to challenge nature. A Surfer won’t complete their search until they’ve ridden that wave, and to do so, they have to take a risk: get in the ocean. There’s no denying the sea can be a scary and challenging place. However, to experience that wave, a Surfer must get out there. Surfers must leave the shore, step into the world of fish, rocks and currents, and take a risk to enjoy their great reward. Therefore, in life, take risks. Don’t be driven by fear, but use the fear as a sign that you are growing and breaking your comfort zone. Be aware of the risks you are facing but paddle into the ocean in search of your perfect wave. 2. Patience Surfers rely on their patience to complete the search. Even when they are already in the water, board and wetsuit ready in the point break, a Surfer must wait and, sometimes, keep waiting. Sometimes they might get lucky and wait seconds, while other times, it may be ten, fifteen or twenty minutes. Sometimes, the lull will be so long a Surfer might doubt if the wait is worthwhile. But for those who wait patiently, that wave will always rise and arrive. Hence, be patient against long waiting periods. Be patient even when everything seems out of your control. There is always a reward for patience. 3. Mindfulness Surfers depend on their mindfulness to make the search worthy. Before getting the thrill of riding that wave, a Surfer is aware of the frequency the waves have that day and depends on their ability to be in the present to understand which is a worthy wave and which isn’t. The autonomy they have to decide which opportunities to take and which ones to leave behind is what permits them to find the right one eventually. And once that wave finally arrives, a Surfer won’t ride it thinking about the next opportunity that will come but enjoy every single snap and turn, being in the present, conscious of their living experience. So be here now, mindful and alive of your experiences, and when they end, already knowing there are more waiting for you, move on and find a new one. Surfers are active and analytical minds. They must understand risks and manage them appropriately as they search for the best seconds of their life. Surfers must be patient during their search, both in and out of the water, as they wait to discover the ideal beach, wait for the right conditions and wait for the wave to arrive. And most importantly, they are mindful of their experiences, which is the one reason that makes their search invaluable, as the risks, patience and effort they’ve put in become the most ravishing reward. So, we invite you to adopt The Surfer’s Mindset as we embark on our searches to find the best waves of our lives. - The Chef's Mindset
Chopping and Roasting by The Dysania Concept (2023) Food is life. Without building a metaphor out of it, food genuinely provides us with the necessary elements to sustain life. And stating the obvious once again, kitchens are where food is made. However, kitchens are also the home of some of the most exciting minds: Chefs. Chefs are the builders of food; they can be anyone and come from anywhere. Your mom might be the Chef in your house, as Wolfgang Puck is in one of his restaurants. Yet, in this piece, we will focus on Chefs who exercise cooking as their profession. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills required to be a Chef. As Thomas Keller explained, “A recipe has no soul. You, as the cook, must bring soul to the recipe.” 1. Leadership Chefs must be leaders to excel in their cooking. Chefs rarely cook alone in a restaurant, as they usually have a team behind them. This team ranges from a Sous-Chef to Station Chefs and Kitchen Porters. Between all these people, a Chef must lead with passion as they spread and excite energy levels. Additionally, they must lead in an organised way to maximise efficiency in the kitchen and pursue synergy as they build a well-oiled team. Similarly, we must understand the different qualities that a leader requires depending on their situation. Hence, whenever you are in a leadership position, focus on what the situation and the team demand. Once you’ve understood it, build from there. Remember, you are always leading your own path too! 2. Endurance Chefs depend on their endurance to succeed. Being a Chef is a high-demanding job that demands a high level of physical and mental stamina. Thus, Chefs rely on their stress tolerance and ability to cope with criticism and face expectations to succeed in such a high-paced workplace. A Chef’s endurance allows them to focus on their end goal, being the delivery of a dish or prepared menu, and succeed against well-known enemies like stress and pressure. So, as a Chef does, trust your endurance and constantly work on it. That way, you’ll deal with the harshest scenarios and begin to find the best solutions to their problems. 3. Resourceful Chefs rely on their resourcefulness to face and solve situations. While cooking, there are an uncountable number of things that can go wrong. Some examples are undercooked chicken, accidents in the kitchen, or even a lack of supplies to make a dish. Nevertheless, Chefs must be resourceful to fill these gaps and solve these problems. More specifically, a Chef relies on their ability to multitask to solve many of these unprecedented situations. Multitasking permits them to focus on several solutions and sometimes even execute them themselves. Therefore, whenever you are pursuing a goal or face a challenging situation, be resourceful to find a solution. Consider all knowledge, tools and people at your disposal, and fight through these obstacles. Kitchens rank among the highest-paced and most stressful workplaces. Consequently, Chefs are some of the toughest and most versatile professionals. Therefore, we invite you to adopt The Chef’s Mindset. Remember toadapt your leadership style to the situation you are facing. Endure against harsh and challenging scenarios and rely on your resourcefulness to create efficient solutions. But beyond these skills, as Thomas Keller explained, remember all our crafts must be practised from the soul, being the distinguishing factor for the best Chefs in the world. - The Teacher's Mindset
Time To Learn by The Dysania Concept (2023) Teaching is the foundation of our society. All accomplishments stem from what our Teachers have planted within us, both in theoretical and practical knowledge and as we grew and built ourselves. Teaching is one of the noblest professions a human can follow, as they dedicate their lives to helping us construct ourselves to face the world. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills a Teacher needs to become one of the key figures in our journey. As E.P. Bertin said, “It is not what is poured into the student, but what is planted, that counts.” 1. Approachable Teachers use their approachability to build a relationship. As students, we have many Teachers throughout our life. We have them at school, university, work, and even at home, yet the ones who become essential to our upbringing demonstrate they are there for us. Memorable Teachers rely on qualities such as kindness, empathy and respect to build their approachability and create a safe space between them and their students. So, work on your approachability to those who surround you, and demonstrate your openness to helping them in their journey towards their goals. Even though each of us chases our own, it is equally important to help others pursue theirs. 2. Communication Teachers must be good communicators to educate. Teachers do more than stand against a chalkboard or screen and review a line of content. Teachers work on communicating these ideas in the most suitable way for their students. Why? Because all students learn differently. Hence, they must speak well and, more importantly, listen to their students’ doubts and questions. Additionally, they must be engaging, as they plant, not pour knowledge on their students. Therefore, work on your communication skills to convey your ideas and thoughts more clearly, and help others do so. 3. Lifelong Learner Teachers are lifelong learners to ensure a positive and lifelong impact. There are many areas in which they never stop learning. One of these is teaching methods, as these are the tools they use to communicate efficiently with their students. Another area is their subject, as they must always stay on top of new knowledge to plant the most recent information and ways of thinking about it in their students. And perhaps the most important one is their students. Teachers are always aware of the new lessons students might leave in them. So, be a lifelong learner, stay on top of things, evolve your thinking process, and absorb knowledge from even the most unlikely places. Independently of what your profession is, as life progresses, we all become teachers. We become parents, have an apprentice at work, or teach ourselves. Therefore, these qualities, virtues and skills become helpful for every single one of us. We must be approachable to create safe spaces for those who surround us. We must be good communicators to share the knowledge and ideas we have. And we must always be lifelong learners to grow our minds and evolve our thinking process. Be grateful for the wonderful Teachers you’ve had in your life. To those Teachers who left a mark on you and helped you become who you are today. And now, be aware that these are the lessons The Teacher’s Mindset leaves us with as we all stop being only students and become Teachers in one way or another. - The Dog's Mindset
The Sleeping Beauty by The Dysania Concept (2019) Dogs are known to be our best friends. If you’ve been lucky enough to have the companionship of a Dog throughout your lifetime, you know how it feels to come back home to them every day, cuddling in your bed with them (if they’re allowed to be there) and sharing moments of joy and laughter. If you haven’t, as most Dog owners have probably told you, get one! Sharing your life and building a relationship with a Dog can be one of life’s most precious experiences, and in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the essential qualities, virtues and skills Dogs teach us through their time on earth. As Roger Caras beautifully explained, “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” 1. Mindfulness Dogs teach us to be mindful of the present. In today’s society, we are constantly busy, trying to check our to-do list, thinking about the past, and worrying about the future. However, I dare you to find a Dog who will not stop whatever they’re doing to chase a ball or have a treat. Dogs will never reject the opportunity to enjoy the day with those they love. Dogs play daily, make time for cuddling, enjoy their food and sleep, and find time to exercise and take care of themselves. In contrast, we tend to forget to make time for the things we enjoy, as we allow other aspects of life to dictate our calendar. So adopt the Dog’s mindfulness and go for ice cream, a movie or a walk in the park! Enjoy today, always. 2. Forgiveness Dogs teach us to forgive and keep on living. Unfortunately, Dogs lack the ability to comprehend why we must go to work and why we must travel without them or go outside while they remain inside. Nevertheless, Dogs don’t live holding grudges. Even though they aren’t capable of understanding why we went away for some hours or a weekend, they will forgive us and move on to maximise our presence. Similarly, we must not hold on to grudges that most likely stem from unimportant issues compared to the affected relationship. We must learn to understand and empathise and not allow grudges to affect the beauty and happiness a relationship brings to our lives. 3. Unconditionality Dogs teach us the value of unconditionality in all of life’s aspects. To them, how we look, how much money we make or how our mood is doesn’t matter. It’s irrelevant. They will always be present to protect us and what we love. They will always share the excitement and happiness of being with us, no matter the scenario. Their love and loyalty towards us will always be unconditional, as they are in love with our minds and spirits, not with life’s material and trivial aspects. Therefore, don’t let these material or trivial elements dictate your presence for someone else. Protect unconditionally. Love unconditionally. Be unconditional. Dogs may not be our whole lives, but they definitely make our lives whole. Their mindfulness, forgiveness and unconditionality make them the best companions and teach us about a lifestyle few of us truly adopt, even though we all should. Dogs teach us how to live in the moment without holding unimportant grudges, which diminish the beauty of relationships and being unconditional for everyone we love. Perhaps Carpe Diem is a good way of summarising a Dog’s life. In Latin, Carpe Diem means seize the day, making the most of the present time. Perhaps in today’s society, that’s what we are missing. So, we invite you to absorb The Dog’s Mindset as we all attempt to make our lives the most whole possible. - The Winter's Mindset
Winter Is Here by The Dysania Concept (2022) Cruel. Lonely. Biting. These are some of the words people use to describe Winter. On the other hand, some people use words like dreamy, cosy and romantic. No matter how you feel about this season of the year, it holds some truths which everyone must acknowledge. So, beyond it being cold and dark, Winter holds the key to some of the most important lessons in the year. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the essential qualities, virtues and skills Winter teaches us through its romantically biting conditions. As Thomas Wentworth Higginson explains, “How many lessons of faith and beauty should we lose if there were no winter in our year.” 1. Faith Winter teaches us to be faithful as we fight adversity. Some people enjoy Winter’s coldness and darkness, and others don’t. However, Winter’s cold and dark days eventually become an adversity to everyone living through them. Animals migrate, plants die to be reborn, and humans adapt their lifestyles. Nevertheless, due to our knowledge of nature’s seasons, we know these conditions will eventually transform into something with more warmth and light. Hence, Winter teaches us to remain faithful and fight the adversity Winter creates in our lives and those who surround us. Similarly, we must apply these teachings to any dark and cold moments in our lives. Remember, as Winter does, this too shall pass. 2. Beauty Winter teaches us to embrace beauty wherever we are. As summer brings days on the beach, long days of sunlight and piña coladas, Winter also brings its own beauty. To some of us, it may be hidden or go unnoticed. However, it may be greater than you realise; drinking a cup of hot chocolate with a loved one, watching a movie with a blanket on your couch with your pet, and enjoying a fire to keep yourself warm. And beyond the cosiness Winter brings to our homes, it also brings beauty to the outside. Perhaps a snowy day, the sound of rain, or the best scarves and sweaters. So maybe Winter doesn’t bring beauty which can be immediately recognisable to some of us, but it is out there. So, as Winter teaches us, be aware of the beauty surrounding you because no matter how dark and cold any time might feel, beauty is always closer than you think. 3. Balance Winter teaches us balance is essential to prosper in life. Winter makes trees go naked and sends animals into hiding or even migrating. At first sight, Winter seems to suck life wherever it manifests itself. However, when seeing the big picture, these scenarios are a necessary stage of life, as they build the balance in nature which permits our world to keep working. Therefore, whenever we feel like we are living in an eternal Winter, we must remember that crossing the low point is essential to begin to rise once more. How would you know how happiness feels if you’ve never experienced sadness? Winter is cold and dark, yet that doesn’t mean it is the negative stage of nature. Winter teaches us to remain faithful against the adversity it creates, reminding us the coldness and darkness we may feel trapped in soon shall pass. Winter permits us to comprehend beauty from a different lens. Perhaps beauty isn’t always presented in the crystal clear form of days at the beach or long days of sunlight. And most importantly, Winter brings balance to life. Winter permits us to appreciate the beauty of the other seasons, as it shows us all cycles of life. So, we invite you to internalise the qualities, virtues and skills Winter leaves within us and use them in your every day to overcome the cold and dark moments we sometimes face, as well as to enjoy and appreciate them within the balance of all things. - The Phoenix's Mindset
A Flame to Rebirth by The Dysania Concept (2022) Another year comes to a close, and the calendar is reset one more time. New Year resolutions and promises are made, and goals and missions are established. As the clock strikes midnight, everyone feels a sense of rebirth, a sense of renewal. Phoenixes are great examples of the power of rebirth and the value it can have in our lives. Professor Dumbledore explained how “phoenixes burst into flame when it is time for them to die and are reborn from the ashes.” So, to understand one of the most influential mythological creatures in history, we invite you to keep reading this edition of The Mindsets, where we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills that make them one of the best examples to follow as we approach a new year. 1. Introspective Phoenixes are introspective and embrace the time to be reborn. Even though many cultures explain the Phoenix’s process of rebirth differently, they all agree it comes from its ability to understand it is time to be reborn. Phoenixes can initiate this due to tiredness, a need to renew their soul or to allow a new version of them to rise. Still, beyond the reason, the main idea is that Phoenixes are capable of being introspective and knowing when it’s time to reborn themselves. We humans can’t burst into flames and rise from our ashes literally, but metaphorically, this can be incredibly powerful. So, as we approach a new year and a new beginning, be introspective about yourself and your life. Think about your relationships, work, and state of mind, and use this opportunity to be reborn from the ashes of your previous self. Even though this doesn’t occur in a single night or when the clock strikes twelve, use this great timing to take the first step. 2. Courage Phoenixes must use their courage to grow into a new life. Some cultures say Phoenixes fly to the sun and become pure fire, while others say when the time has come, the Phoenix itself lights up on fire, but in both scenarios, the sheer will of the Phoenix to burn and transform itself into ashes requires plenty of courage. When we are introspective and decide it is time to be reborn or renew ourselves, we need the courage to face the flames and the fire that will allow us to become simple and plain ashes from where we can rebuild who we are. Therefore, put yourself, metaphorically, in the fire, burning your previous body and mind and creating space for a renewal, a rebirth. 3. Hopeful Phoenixes inspire hope by pushing through flames and fire to renew their life. When burning and creating space for a new and grown life, Phoenixes hope for a reborn soul. As they courageously place themselves in the fire, they must always hope and believe in the good outcomes this will provide. Many cultures have seen the death and rise of the Phoenix as a hopeful renewal in spirit. Thus, the Phoenix not only uses its hope to have the courage to face its flaming rebirth but inspires the same hope in others as they see the greatness of allowing yourself to mature into something better. So, have hope and trust yourself when you have decided to begin this challenging growth process towards becoming a closer version of who you aspire to be. Phoenixes are reborn by burning into ashes and growing again from the foundations of their previous self. Similarly, we must be introspective to understand what needs to change within ourselves to become who we aspire to be, and we then must have the courage to face the process, no matter the toughness of it. Once we have the courage to be reborn, we must hope and trust in ourselves, inspiring the same hope of renewal and growth in others who watch us endure the process. Therefore, as we approach a new year, we invite you to consider The Phoenix’s Mindset as the calendar resets, and we take on the challenge of using our previous self as fuel to be reborn into who we aspire to be. - The Santa Claus Mindset
A White Christmas by The Dysania Concept (2022) Christmas looms, and we start to imagine his sleigh between the stars in the sky, led by Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. We begin to hear him say, “Ho-ho-ho.” We ponder how he makes millions of gifts and wonder how on earth he travels the world in a single night to give them out. Christmas looms, and Santa Claus comes to life again, infecting all of us with his kindness and joy. A myth as old as time, evolving in appearance and identity but never in spirit. So, as we all become surrounded by Christmas, we invite you to read this edition of The Mindsets, where we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Santa Claus has that allow him to be one of the purest images of happiness and love. As Edwin Osgood Grover said, “Santa Claus is anyone who loves another and seeks to make them happy; who gives himself by thought or word or deed in every gift that he bestows.” 1. Idealistic Dreamer Santa Claus is an idealistic dreamer who will work relentlessly towards his far-fetched goal - creating billions of gifts within a year and delivering them in a single night. Idealistic dreamers focus on what seems like an unattainable goal and work with all their might and power towards it. Thus, Santa Claus fits the category, as every Christmas, he proves his impeccable work ethic, along with Mrs Claus, the elves and the reindeer, when he reaches his ideal dream. Still, we who aren’t magical beings must be aware of the dangers of idealistic dreaming and remember we must also be realistic dreamers. A balance between a supposedly unattainable goal within real-life parameters might be the most thrilling and captivating chases of our lives. 2. Altruistic Santa Claus’ altruism helps him dedicate his life to the happiness of others. As he devotes the time between Christmases to produce billions of gifts and, on Christmas Eve, travels around 195 countries, Santa Claus lives a life dedicated to the happiness and inspiration of the children he blesses with gifts. Along with Mrs Claus and his team, Santa Claus works endlessly to reward children’s good behaviour around the world and make them believe in happiness, kindness and love. Like Santa Claus, we must be able to chase our goals as we also help inspire joy in the ones around us, always encouraging kindness and love through our selfless deeds. 3. Humble Santa Claus’ humbleness allows him to be a great leader. It is a well-known fact that anytime Santa Claus is approached by an elf, he will always first say, how can I help? By being humble, loving and kind, Santa Claus is one of humanity’s best examples of leadership. As he runs a factory with, some stories say six and others say thousands of elves, his leadership is unmatched. Santa Claus never forgets to mention the importance of his elves and reindeer during his production and distribution of gifts and Mrs Claus’ unquestionable support. So similarly, as we chase, obtain and chase more goals, we must always remain true to our origins, support system and self. No matter the success, we must never let it cloud our judgment and become someone we are not. Therefore, remember always to be humble, thank the people who deserve it, be a leader and build success, but never forget who you are in the process. Santa Claus is one of the purest images of happiness and love due to his ability to inspire his best qualities, virtues and skills in others. Santa is an idealistic dreamer who will always work towards his goal regardless of setbacks. He will forever work for the happiness of the ones he bestows his gifts upon, as his altruism and humbleness permit him to remain his true self, focused on his purpose in life, inspiring good and creating smiles for a better world. Therefore, we invite you to implement The Santa Claus Mindset during the holiday season and the rest of your life as you implement Santa’s work ethic to your path toward your goals. Have a Merry Christmas! Ho, ho, ho! - The Industrial Engineer's Mindset
The Deming Cycle by The Dysania Concept (2022) In a society where efficiency is key to excelling, Industrial Engineers are the masterminds of creating processes fueled by it. Industrial Engineers are responsible for optimising their resources and creating synergy as they build an efficient system to eliminate waste, integrate the team into a single strategy and make the best use of the machines, energy and materials at their disposal. As a profession officially acknowledged with its title around the Industrial Revolution, Industrial Engineers have been around for several centuries. So, to discover how to become the most efficient version of yourself, we invite you to keep reading this edition of The Mindsets, where we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Industrial Engineers have that allow them to be the champions of efficiency and optimisation. As Antoine de Saint-Exupery said, “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” 1. Project Planning Industrial Engineers rely on their project planning skills to build the perfect system. When tasked with a goal, the first step is to analyse the situation and construct a project plan. When doing so, Industrial Engineers consider several factors, such as the team, materials and resources at their disposal, as well as any setbacks they might face and how to overcome them. Additionally, they use previously learned tools to organise the strategy they will use to achieve the goal before the deadline. Some of these include The Deming Cycle, Cause and Effect diagrams and Flow Charts, all excellent tools to be used by anyone when building a plan. Thus, when you start building an efficient strategy to tackle your goal, acknowledge the resources available, consider all the positive and negative factors affecting the situation, and use existing tools, or even new ones you might build, to begin the road towards success. 2. Communication Industrial Engineers must communicate with their teams for maximum efficiency. Communicating your strategy is crucial to success if you work with a team or someone who is key to reaching your goal. An Industrial Engineer is highly capable of transmitting their strategy to all the team members, explaining the role and responsibilities each of them has and answering any doubts, as well as receiving feedback and taking it into account. With proper communication, Industrial Engineers can be efficient, as they must know they rely on their team members and any other involved party to accomplish their tasks. So, talk and explain your strategy to everyone involved, as well as people who aren’t, to take new ideas and a fresh perspective into account. 3. Critical Thinking Industrial Engineers must use critical thinking to find the best path towards their goal. No plan ever built has gone as it was meant. Changes occur because of unexpected events, both positive and negative, and these will always affect the original strategy. Hence, Industrial Engineers must be able to use their critical thinking constantly to overcome these hardships and take advantage of them. They must continuously reflect and analyse their strategy to reassure themselves they are still on the path towards their goal. An Industrial Engineering idea that illustrates this is Continous Improvement, which focuses on building a system that perfects itself as time passes, eventually allowing for the pursuit of a bigger goal. Continuous Improvement can be such a powerful goal to chase in our personal lives, as we can focus on improving our yesterday’s self and, parallel to that, allowing ourselves to chase greater and more desirable goals. So, use your critical thinking constantly to evaluate your strategy, find solutions to any hardships you might face, and find areas of improvement within the original plan, as you keep building the stairs towards the top of the mountain. Industrial Engineers are the best example of the importance of being efficient when working towards a goal. All goals require different analyses, methods and tools to be accomplished. Yet, the ability to plan a project and its strategies, communicate them to your team and rely on your critical thinking to achieve them is undisputed. Therefore, we invite you to adopt The Industrial Engineer’s Mindset into your daily life, being through your personal or work goals, as you create the perfect strategy to tackle what you are chasing.
