Winter Is Here by The Dysania Concept (2022)
Cruel. Lonely. Biting. These are some of the words people use to describe Winter. On the other hand, some people use words like dreamy, cosy and romantic. No matter how you feel about this season of the year, it holds some truths which everyone must acknowledge. So, beyond it being cold and dark, Winter holds the key to some of the most important lessons in the year. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the essential qualities, virtues and skills Winter teaches us through its romantically biting conditions. As Thomas Wentworth Higginson explains, “How many lessons of faith and beauty should we lose if there were no winter in our year.”
1. Faith
Winter teaches us to be faithful as we fight adversity. Some people enjoy Winter’s coldness and darkness, and others don’t. However, Winter’s cold and dark days eventually become an adversity to everyone living through them. Animals migrate, plants die to be reborn, and humans adapt their lifestyles. Nevertheless, due to our knowledge of nature’s seasons, we know these conditions will eventually transform into something with more warmth and light. Hence, Winter teaches us to remain faithful and fight the adversity Winter creates in our lives and those who surround us. Similarly, we must apply these teachings to any dark and cold moments in our lives. Remember, as Winter does, this too shall pass.
2. Beauty
Winter teaches us to embrace beauty wherever we are. As summer brings days on the beach, long days of sunlight and piña coladas, Winter also brings its own beauty. To some of us, it may be hidden or go unnoticed. However, it may be greater than you realise; drinking a cup of hot chocolate with a loved one, watching a movie with a blanket on your couch with your pet, and enjoying a fire to keep yourself warm. And beyond the cosiness Winter brings to our homes, it also brings beauty to the outside. Perhaps a snowy day, the sound of rain, or the best scarves and sweaters. So maybe Winter doesn’t bring beauty which can be immediately recognisable to some of us, but it is out there. So, as Winter teaches us, be aware of the beauty surrounding you because no matter how dark and cold any time might feel, beauty is always closer than you think.
3. Balance
Winter teaches us balance is essential to prosper in life. Winter makes trees go naked and sends animals into hiding or even migrating. At first sight, Winter seems to suck life wherever it manifests itself. However, when seeing the big picture, these scenarios are a necessary stage of life, as they build the balance in nature which permits our world to keep working. Therefore, whenever we feel like we are living in an eternal Winter, we must remember that crossing the low point is essential to begin to rise once more. How would you know how happiness feels if you’ve never experienced sadness?
Winter is cold and dark, yet that doesn’t mean it is the negative stage of nature. Winter teaches us to remain faithful against the adversity it creates, reminding us the coldness and darkness we may feel trapped in soon shall pass. Winter permits us to comprehend beauty from a different lens. Perhaps beauty isn’t always presented in the crystal clear form of days at the beach or long days of sunlight. And most importantly, Winter brings balance to life. Winter permits us to appreciate the beauty of the other seasons, as it shows us all cycles of life. So, we invite you to internalise the qualities, virtues and skills Winter leaves within us and use them in your every day to overcome the cold and dark moments we sometimes face, as well as to enjoy and appreciate them within the balance of all things.
