The Undersea by The Dysania Concept (2016)
Submerging yourself into an unknown world, relying on your equipment to explore the wonders of the ocean - that’s the definition of a Scuba Diver. The unattainability and beauty of the undersea world make Scuba Divers hungry to discover, explore and learn about what lies in the ocean’s depths. However, to dive into the sea and adventure into the unknown, Scuba Divers rely on a specific mindset. Hence, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Scuba Divers have that allow them to venture into the unknown with confidence and commitment. As Jacques Cousteau said, “The reason I love the sea I cannot explain - it’s physical. When you dive, you begin to feel like an angel. It’s a liberation of your weight.”
1. Spatial Awareness
Scuba Divers rely on their spatial awareness to comprehend their surroundings. Spatial awareness is the ability to know what surrounds you and where your body is positioned within that zone. Therefore, it is crucial to Scuba Divers as it permits them to organise their mind and understand what is far, close and too close. Their spatial awareness enables them to position themselves in the best place to experience the beauty in front of their eyes and remain out of danger. Similarly, we must always know what surrounds us and where we stand within that same zone. Recognising where your body and mind are will help you enormously when facing any challenge or situation, as you’ll be able to know not only where you stand but where to move to maximise the experience.
2. Communication
Scuba Divers depend on their communication skills to stay safe. Talking in the ocean is impossible, especially if you breathe through an oxygen tank. Thus, Scuba Divers depend on their communication system based on hand signs. Not knowing how to communicate with your underwater partners can put you and others in an unsafe situation, which can stem from dangerous wildlife, equipment issues or mental struggles. Therefore, Scuba Divers must study and learn to communicate efficiently underwater to ensure their safety. So, when working with people or in a situation relevant to people, remember always to communicate efficiently. Most of the problems we face every day are born from a lack of communication, so let’s fix that!
3. Respect
Scuba Divers must be respectful to ensure a rewarding experience. The ocean is not human territory. If it were our territory, breathing and speaking would be possible. Therefore, Scuba Divers must respect their surroundings to guarantee a rewarding experience and protect the ocean’s wildlife. Scuba Divers must never leave any residues that don’t belong in the sea or the animal’s home. Scuba Divers mustn’t touch delicate flora, like corals, as it can hurt them beyond repair. And Scuba Divers must respect all animals in their way for their safety and the animal’s peace. Now, how is this relevant to you? When being in unknown territories, such as a new job, country or daily situation, respect your surroundings and those with you. Understand the rules of this new environment and accept them.
Scuba Divers are a great example of how to behave and respond to unknown territories we may encounter in life. When facing these new territories, we must know our surroundings and where we stand. We must communicate appropriately with our team and anyone relevant to the scenario. And most importantly, we must always respect the unknown and everything that comes with it. Both a fish, a shark and a coral deserve equal respect, and following that recipe, we’ll always be successful when facing the unknown. So, we invite you to adopt The Scuba Diver’s Mindset as we face the challenges life puts in our way, along with the unknown territories and situations it puts us in.
