- The Astronaut's Mindset
Flying to the Moon (2022) by The Dysania Concept Astronauts, meaning star sailors, are highly educated and trained individuals equipped and deployed to serve in space missions. Space programs, such as NASA, create and execute these missions to gather information about outer space and form crews made of Astronauts to lead the physical exploration. From the first launch of a manmade object in 1957 to the development of the International Space Station, humans have come a long way in exploring space, and at the helm are the Astronauts. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Astronauts have that enable them to live their dream: experience what’s out there. As Neil Armstrong said, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” 1. Endurance Astronauts rely on their endurance to fight through the demands of space travel. Beyond the physical challenges Astronauts face, their mental endurance is vital to their success. For example, being separated from their loved ones and living in close quarters for months with a few individuals can take a toll on their minds, leading to feelings of isolation or fear when they realise they are floating in space with no escape route. Nevertheless, despite all the hardship their mission brings, Astronauts use their ability to endure to fight through the demands of their jobs and work for the greater good the results of their mission can bring. Therefore, no matter how hard it can get, endure. Plant your feet on the ground and remain firm against all that tries to push you back, and when the storm has passed, start walking again, step by step. 2. Adaptability Astronauts count on their adaptability to face their working conditions. Besides the various tasks they have to go through, Astronauts have to be able to adapt to their surroundings. Issues can and will arise, and when they do, Astronauts have to be flexible and find a solution with what they have. Additionally, for example, in the International Space Station, Astronauts work with people from different countries, bringing various cultures, customs and ways of thinking together. Thus, a healthy working environment is crucial to remaining flexible and willing to adapt to a common consensus. So, when conditions don’t align with your preference, be flexible, see what you have at your disposal and adjust. Find solutions and try new ideas instead of complaining or remaining close-minded with your position. 3. Team Work Astronauts must be team workers to complete their mission. Astronauts will never work alone. They are in constant communication with not just other Astronauts but base command, too. Their ability to communicate thoughts, ideas and feelings properly is paramount to keeping the mission moving forward, as their work environment can become personal and close physically and emotionally, making it crucial to be a team worker. Likely, when working in almost anything, we will be surrounded by and rely on a team, and whether you’re leading or following someone’s leadership with the team, you must be a team worker. That does not mean being complacent or following them around, but healthily exchanging ideas, inciting constructive discussions that lead to helpful outcomes. Astronauts are extraordinary minds, deciding to leave this Planet and leaving most of what and who they know to find something to help us understand more. So, as Astronauts do, work on your mental endurance. To prepare yourself for when the hard times come, remember to train like Astronauts, too; cold plunges are a great start. Also, be adaptable. Problems will come, and your approach to them is essential to your chances of success. Finally, know we are constantly working with people. Whether we lead them or not, the input others have in our thoughts, ideas, and feelings is part of our everyday lives. Hence, knowing how to work with them is paramount to moving forward. Now, we invite you to adopt The Astronaut’s Mindset as we strive to explore what we have been wanting to and, through the process, maintain the integrity and strength with which we approached it the very first day. - The Hiker's Mindset
A Long Path by The Dysania Concept (2023) Mount Etna, the Appalachian Trail, Machu Picchu, Tour du Mont Blanc and the West Coast Trail are all paths around the world that thousands of people adventure each year. Like these, many more are around our planet, offering unique landscapes and challenges. From beginner to master level, Hikers share a common mind to embrace these adventures. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Hikers have that permit them to roam through nature, hiking in all terrains and conditions and complete their newest experience. As Hippocrates said, “Walking is a man’s best medicine.” 1. Endurance Hikers count on their endurance to face the challenges of their path. Endurance supports us through tough times, and when hiking and going uphill in tricky weather conditions, only that will help you see the journey through. Enduring all challenges a hike offers is vital to reaching the destination, and it is when one gets to the top, sits down and takes in the view while listening to the world surrounding them, that one realises the power of it. So, whenever you feel you’re going uphill with harsh winds blowing in your face and a hole in your shoe, endure. Despite how impossible it might seem, fight through the unpleasant, especially if you know what awaits you in the finishing line. Keep moving or hold your position, but never let the challenge send you rolling downhill. 2. Flexibility Hikers must be flexible to walk through the hardships their adventure presents. Within their endurance, Hikers rely on their flexibility to fight against the unexpected. Maybe your socks get wet, or you forgot your water bottle. Nevertheless, Hikers will endure through their flexibility, built from their ability to think logically and creatively against challenges and adaptability. Similarly, when enduring difficulties, we must remain flexible to find a way out of them. Standing firmly with both feet is a significant first step, but only flexibility will enable you to step forward. 3. Appreciation Hikers lean on their ability to appreciate not just to achieve but to enjoy. Beyond their ability to find a way through hardships and challenges, Hikers deeply appreciate where they’re walking through. Their attention to detail and ability to observe beyond what the eyes can see permit them to fulfil every hike’s purpose. Their appreciation for the landscape they’re chasing and the hike it takes to get there allows them to construct these experiences and remember them with joy, including the tribulations they brought. Thus, no matter how hard or challenging it gets, enjoy the hike. Be appreciative of your chance to experience the passage of time and take in every moment with the same excitement as when you reach your destination. Hikers are minds filled with stamina and will. Their ability to make an adventure from every hike, whether it holds complications or not, is astonishing. They adventure the world, taking in its landscapes and beauty while experiencing some of its difficulties. So, to have a similar approach in our daily lives, remember to endure. Endurance will allow you to stand firmly against trouble and enjoy the feeling of reaching the finishing line. And be aware that endurance will help you stand firmly, but only flexibility will permit you to move forward. Think creatively and logically to overcome all problems you face. Finally, remember to appreciate it all. Appreciate waking up, conversing, eating, working, exercising, watching a movie, submitting an assignment, taking a trip. Now, we invite you to adopt The Hiker’s Mindset as we value the beauty and terrors of life and enjoy every day as a new trek in the greater hike we call life. - The Butterfly's Mindset
Ecstatic Beauty by The Dysania Concept (2023) From an egg to a larva, an insect is born. As time passes, it eats and sleeps until it grows and prepares for its next chapter. When ready to grow, away it goes, and from the solitude, a cocoon it becomes. After a time, from the cocoon, a butterfly is born and, when it learns to fly, explores the world until it abides by its time. Butterflies have breathtaking life cycles, where their ability to evolve into something beautiful is the end product of a lifetime of growth. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Butterflies have that enable us to understand the beauty of the journey. Dodonsky wrote, “The Butterfly said to the Sun, ‘They can’t stop talking about my transformation. I can only do it once in my lifetime. If only they know they can do it countless times and in many ways…’” 1. Self-Growth Butterflies teach us the effects of self-growth. Despite being renowned for their colourful beauty, Butterflies do not have that appearance throughout their life. Their beauty arrives in their last stage after they’ve journeyed through life and growth. As mentioned in the introduction, Butterflies know they have a journey ahead of themselves and work through it to reach their ecstatic beauty. Butterflies choose to embark on a path of self-growth. So, whenever you feel like you’re not in the place you would like to be, whether because you think you lack a skill or quality, acknowledge you are on a journey. Only you can choose this path, so once you do, remember every step will take you in that direction, so slowly and carefully, start taking them. 2. Solitude Butterflies teach us the importance of solitude when having to grow. During the most critical part of their self-growth journey, Butterflies cherish the beauty of solitude. When comprehending it is time to step into their cocoon, they do it independently, away from the world they know. Butterflies know solitude is vital to completing this part of the journey, and they embrace it rather than run from it despite maybe fearing being alone. Similarly, there are times in our journey when we must step away from the world we know and take action. Solitude is the first step towards comprehending your mind as it lets you face your thoughts and feelings by yourself and fight through to reach an understanding. 3. Healthy Dissatisfaction Butterflies teach us the power of healthy dissatisfaction when dealing with our journey’s chapters. Butterflies go through each step of self-growth because nature commands it’s time to evolve. The Butterfly’s nature begins to show them the boundaries and limits regarding their current stage. Hence, they develop towards a new one that will enable them to reach their most beautiful phase. Thus, the dissatisfaction that leads them to the next step stems from a need to grow, not a hate of who they are. Therefore, when we decide to grow, this must come from a healthy dissatisfaction, meaning a need to grow because we want to be more, not because we need to be more or stop being who we are. Butterflies are a shining metaphor for the journey we all adventure. We all go through stages, growing from the ones we were before, and we need cocoons to rest between them to ensure we take the best teachings and prepare for what’s to come. Luckily, unlike Butterflies, we go through this process several times. We experience several cacoons and reach new beauty and wholeness plenty of times. Therefore, remember the value of adventuring through self-growth. It is a journey one must decide to embark on where who we want to become lies at the end. Also, let’s value solitude. Being alone with your mind can be one of the best situations you find yourself in. Loneliness is a time to observe, reflect and learn, leading to insightful teachings and knowledge. Finally, let this journey of self-growth come from the healthy dissatisfaction you feel. Allow your decision to become better to be inspired not from a need to stop being who you are but from wanting to be more. In the end, if we could erase all our mistakes, a different person would stand where we do. Now, we invite you to adopt The Butterfly’s Mindset as we adventure through life, growing and working towards the most beautiful versions of ourselves. - The Social Worker's Mindset
Together We Rise by The Dysania Concept (2023) Psychology, sociology, health, political science, community development, law and economics; to many, these are independent career paths that, despite being connected in many ways, aren’t covered by a single person throughout their professional life. However, there is a group of people who not only cover these but most fields of study related to people and social justice. Social Workers are professionals whose purpose is to protect and better the lives of individuals, families, communities and society. They engage with the individual, systems and policy to improve the quality of life of those who need it the most and, step by step, reduce the social injustice in our world. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Social Workers have that enable them to create social change and development. As Hellen Keller said, “Alone, we can do so little. Together, we can do so much.” 1. Empathy Social Workers must be empathetic to relate to those they are helping. Whether working to support a service user or a community directly or dealing with politicians and policy-makers to help them indirectly, a Social Worker’s empathy is essential to remain true to their cause. Despite not having experienced the life of those they are helping, Social Workers can step into those people’s shoes and comprehend what they’re going through. They feel what their service users feel and work from there to reach the best path to help them improve their situation. Equally, we must remain aware of each other’s lives. We all live under different conditions, feel different and come from diverse backgrounds. Therefore, despite never having experienced the other person’s position, trying to understand where they come from, what they are feeling and learning how we can help them from there will always be an invaluable first step to aiding those who need us. 2. Active Listening Social Workers lean on their ability to listen actively to find the most significant ways to help. As we have different lives, so do those who need the help of Social Workers. Some are shy, others are loud. Some are verbal, others are silent. Some are aware, and others are lost. Nevertheless, Social Workers know how to actively listen to their service users through all conditions and methods of communication. Knowing how to listen to someone’s narrative actively is their next best step towards building the proper strategy for leading them to a better quality of life and, in more macro aspects, closer to the social justice they strive for. Similarly, when someone in need approaches us, we must not hear but listen to them. Paying attention to the tone of their voice, their physical gestures, vocabulary, and intonation is vital to genuinely comprehending where their pain and struggles are coming from and how we can begin their healing and betterment process from there. 3. Self-Care Social Workers trust their ability to self-care to maintain a balance between work and life. Once they’ve established a connection with their service user and have begun the process to aid them in whatever way they need, Social Workers need to remember the importance of themselves, too. In such an emotionally draining profession, the mind can always become exhausted. Hence, Social Workers value the importance of self-care. They know how paramount it is to be healthy in mind and body to balance their work and personal life. Social Workers understand the importance of boundaries and rely on their judgement to know when to step back, have proper downtime and refresh themselves to keep making the world a better place. So, whenever your body feels tired, consumed and needs rest, listen to it. We are human, not machines, and rest and downtime are critical to not only maintaining the balance Social Workers do but also enjoying their lives and bringing back knowledge from those enjoyments into their quest for a better society. Social Workers should be regarded more highly by society. The effort they put into bettering the world from a micro and macro aspect is something to admire. From working with individual service users to proposing and making changes with governmental bodies, they shape our world into a more just and healthy place. So, remember the value of empathy. Take the time to understand what someone is feeling and where those feelings come from. Do not rush into judgment, but understand we are all different. Also, listen actively. Listen beyond the words. Understand the tone, physical movement and intonation of those who speak to you. These often communicate more than the words themselves. And finally, value your mind and body. Resting, having downtime and enjoying the things you love are all necessary to refresh yourself and wake up in a more knowledgeable and healthy state the next day. Now, we invite you to adopt The Social Worker’s Mindset as we all strive to make the lives of those who surround us better by aiding them whenever our help is needed. - The Chandler Bing's Mindset
From ‘The One with the Embryos’ in Friends (1994-2004) In one of his latest interviews, Matthew Perry said, “When I die, I don’t want Friends to be the first thing they mention. I want helping people to be the first thing that’s mentioned,” but what he might not have realised is that by bringing Chandler Bing to life, he created and shared so much help, love and endless laughter. Everyone who has watched Friends knows about Chandler’s healing superpowers, where a sarcastic comment or facial expression can inspire so much in anyone. And, despite only being the tip of the iceberg of how Matthew helped the world be a better place, it seems like a good one to reflect upon. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Chandler Bing has that enable him to be a role model to all of us who are working our way to become the best versions of ourselves. 1. Embrace Himself Chandler teaches us the importance of embracing ourselves for who we truly are. No matter how tough, stressful or complicated the situation, Chandler always chose to be himself. By journeying from having commitment issues to marrying Monica and having twins with her, Chandler showed us how embracing ourselves and our weaknesses can create a life where every day we can let go and be who our mind and heart tell us to be. Moreover, he taught us the value of laughing at ourselves. Whether when we make mistakes or while working on our weaknesses, laughing at ourselves will always make life's path more fun by filling it with smiles and laughter, even in our worst times. So, as Chandler teaches us, don’t reject who you are but embrace it. Trust what your mind and heart tell you. Dance like no one is watching. Enjoy every step of the process with the ones who surround you and, most importantly, yourself. 2. Supportive Chandler’s endless support for his friends teaches us the value of inspiring hope and good in others. From showing Joey the trust he has in him as an actor and his endless support to Monica while they couldn’t conceive, Chandler is always there to support their friends as well as he can, even though he can sometimes only offer a sarcastic comment. Additionally, the support he provides to his friends often comes from the support they showed to him in the past, as well as his support inspiring them. So, it is essential to note that support is reciprocal, and being there for each other is a commitment one must make to inspire goodness in each other’s lives. Similarly, we must support those we love in their lives. Whether through simple messages or more extensive expressions of love and trust, because being there for each other can only bring beauty and joy to everyone’s lives. 3. Vulnerability Chandler’s vulnerability teaches us the power of communicating what’s on our minds. As mentioned earlier, by embracing himself, Chandler not only recognises his weaknesses but works on them and, during the process, laughs at them, too. However, a crucial part of his journey to become who he is comes from his capacity to be vulnerable. Expressing how he is feeling, whether stressed, anxious or heartbroken, is paramount to keeping his mind healthy through the struggles and challenges he faces. Acknowledging his feelings and working and learning from them is vital to growth. Therefore, be vulnerable. Take the time to know how you are feeling and work through those feelings. And remember to share your feelings with your friends and be vulnerable with them. Be there for their vulnerable moments, and let them be there for yours. On the surface, Chandler Bing suggests laughter and funny awkwardness. Nevertheless, the teachings he leaves for us are more profound and often overlooked. His ability to inspire smiles and love by being himself is genuinely exceptional. So, remember to embrace yourself. Being yourself is the best path towards achieving balance and inspiring what you want in the world we all share. Also, be supportive of those you love. The power a simple message of trust or inspiration can have on another person is something we don’t think about often enough. And finally, be vulnerable. Don’t be afraid to share what you feel. Express your emotions, whether they make you smile or cry. Understand them, work through them and, most importantly, learn from them. Now, we invite you to adopt The Chandler Bing’s Mindset as we all work to be the best version of ourselves by leaving smiles, laughter and fun along the path. So, before we end this edition of The Mindsets, thank you, Matthew Perry, for creating such an everlasting, beautifully inspiring character and for your endless devotion to helping those who needed it the most. Your footprint in this world will always be a reminder of the power of love and hope. As Paget Brewster beautifully said, “He won’t rest in peace though… He’s already too busy making everyone laugh up there.” Thank you, Matthew. Thank you. - The Concept Artist's Mindset
Pencil, Fine Pen and Art by The Dysania Concept (2023) Fun fact! Everything begins as a sketch. Whether discussing your favourite characters, creatures or landscapes in film, they all started as a sketch, as concept art. Concept art is a form of visual art used to illustrate ideas and bring them to life when preparing to tell a story. Hence, as a first step, creators use concept art in film, video games, animation, comic books, television shows and many more, and the people responsible for bringing these ideas to life and taking the first step into building the story and its world are Concept Artists. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Concept Artists have that permit them to be the key to constructing and begin to shape the stories and worlds we adore so much. As Bertolt Brecht said, “Art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it.” 1. Knowledgeable Concept Artists must be knowledgeable to translate ideas into art. Besides knowledge of technical skills for creating their art, Concept Artists must know a bit of everything. Because they deal with all sorts of ideas, from humanoid to abstract creatures, landscapes with all shapes and colours, and objects of all types, they must understand the theory behind them. Even though some might say it comes down to knowing shapes and colour theory, Concept Artists need to comprehend where the creator’s ideas come from and know what references they can use to build on them. Hence, being knowledgeable also includes their ability to research and pay attention to detail to get as close to the brief’s request as possible. Similarly, when having an upcoming series of tasks, we must research and learn as much as we can to prepare for them, and, equally important, never stop learning, no matter how experienced we are. Knowing how to keep learning from the world surrounding us to inspire ourselves to keep creating is invaluable. 2. Time Management Concept Artists lean on their time management to help move the project forward. Most creators begin with multiple tasks at the same time. However, concept art is often required to allow the process to move forward. In animation, concept art is needed to know the official animation style. In films, concept art is critical to commence making costumes and preparing makeup because they all need to align to a single style. In video games, concept art is vital to begin almost any step of the process, whether it is character design, graphics, or environment development. Concept Artists lay the foundation for a good project outcome. Thus, they must be able to manage their time, checkpoints and deadlines properly. Late concept art means a delayed project, and the Concept Artists who truly succeed in their industry are the ones who consistently deliver when agreed upon. Therefore, never underestimate the value of being punctual. Sometimes, more might depend on us than what we believe, and even if that is not the case, knowing how to distribute our time to create space for balance is essential to producing our best work. 3. Communication Concept Artists count on their communication skills to properly collaborate with their team. Whether they are discussing the brief the creator has given them or early drafts of the work, knowing how to translate ideas and proposals into words is essential to establishing a positive working relationship and allowing the process to move forward efficiently. But beyond translating ideas and proposals, knowing how to communicate when receiving feedback as a Concept Artist is necessary to ensure a positive journey with the project’s creator. Hence, communicate when you have an idea or proposal. Work on articulating your thoughts into words so that you can establish synergy in your working relationships and create a feedback loop designed to create a path for the work to be its best version. Think before speaking, and listen while others speak. Concept Artists are the backbone of most media we consume. Their art and designs are the foundation for our favourite films, games and TV shows. And despite not being held and recognised as they should, they know how invaluable they are to any creative process. So, remember to continue learning, always. Constantly learning from your surroundings and storing the valuable teachings you encounter is essential to becoming knowledgeable, enabling you to involve yourself in the tasks you take more deeply and wisely. Understanding how to manage your time is vital to being an excellent professional and permits your work to breathe and slowly evolve into the best version of itself. And finally, listen to what others say and think before you speak. Communicating correctly with colleagues, superiors, and people you lead is paramount to establishing a good working environment and a healthy working process, giving everyone the freedom to input ideas and thoughts and shape the outcome together. Now, we invite you to adopt The Concept Artist’s Mindset as we begin to construct and shape the first steps of our following path and build the foundation for the ideas and goals we want to pursue. If you want to know more about The Dysania Concept, read more in the ‘Who We Are’ section of the website, follow us on social media, and subscribe to our weekly newsletter.
- The Swimmer's Mindset
Swimming Gear by The Dysania Concept (2023) You step out of the changing room. You’re wearing your speedos, goggles and cap. You’re listening to the music that gets you pumping. You’re feeling the pressure as you walk, the nerves and the excitement, too. They announce your name, and you step onto the stage. Eight lanes, eight swimmers and one winner. The crowd is roaring. You feel their shouting. The music stops - one final stretch. The whistle blows. You step onto the springboard. Complete silence. And then, “Take your marks… go.” And like that, the crowd explodes again, and the longest seconds of your lifetime begin as you race for your medal. Swimmers are extraordinary athletes. Beyond competing in such a millimetric and complete sport, their need to balance mind and body throughout the race is exceptional. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Swimmers have that permit them to be such fierce and fantastic sportspeople. As Alexandr Popov said, “The water is your friend. You don’t have to fight with water; just share the same spirit as the water, and it will help you move.” 1. Vision Swimmers count on their vision to see their races through. Whether it is a short 100-metre or a long 1,000-metre race, all Swimmers must be able to visualise their task. Their vision permits them to anticipate how every lap will feel, how their muscles will change throughout the race and how they will need to control their breath. These are some of the core elements to maximising their performance, and understanding them before they feel them enables them to give their all. Ultimately, their vision allows them to see before they live. Therefore, when preparing for an important event, we must have the vision to comprehend what we are stepping into. Visualising our path before taking the first step will guide us through the best route. 2. Perfectionist Swimmers lean on their perfectionism to better their time. Before visualising the race, Swimmers train. Throughout that training, besides increasing their strength, they improve their technique because, like most sports, spotless technique can be a better tool than raw strength. Swimmers must become one with the water and feel comfortable, not fight its resistance, and when they master this, their technique will outlast all raw strength. So, as they spend their lives perfecting their technique, swimming slowly, thinking of every stroke, and bettering their oxygen management, they become more formidable competitors. Similarly, we must focus on the techniques and skills we need and improve them to become the best version of ourselves. By perfecting the soft and hard skills your goal requires first, you will then be able to increase the length and pace of the steps because you are better prepared and know how to move better. 3. Intrapersonal Communication Swimmers must have intrapersonal communication to excel in their sport. Despite competing against other people, Swimmers do not have a way of impacting their competitor’s results. They can’t tackle, interfere or distract other Swimmers. Hence, they ultimately compete against themselves, and to improve their records, they must self-communicate properly. Whether it’s to focus during training, reduce the nerves before a race, or understand what their body is asking during a race, Swimmers must find an equilibrium between mind and body to focus on their results. Is their body asking to rest the legs? Are their arms telling them they can handle more? Do they have enough oxygen to breathe less often and increase speed? These are some of the questions proper self-communication can help them answer, placing them in a position where the challenge is to beat themselves, leading them to become their best version. So, know the value of knowing yourself and, most importantly, how to communicate with your mind and body. Listening to what your body asks and valuing your mind’s thoughts and feelings are vital to success. Swimmers are incredibly hard workers. Between their core strength, impeccable technique and mind discipline, they masterfully move in water, reaching outstanding speed and bettering their previous records constantly. So, to follow the same course, remember the importance of visualising your upcoming path, its challenges and hardships so you can overcome them as you experience them. Also, remember the value of perfecting your soft and hard skills before embracing a new journey. These improvements will help you work smarter, not harder, and reach better results because of your previous training. However, also be aware you can’t train forever without racing. Train, race, analyse the results and improve. And finally, communicate with your mind and body. Know what your muscles ask for, trust what your mind needs, and find equilibrium between it all. Use other people’s results as a reference, learn from their mistakes, how you can prevent them, and learn from their success and how you can achieve it. But ultimately, compete against yourself. Your life, your race. Now, we invite you to adopt The Swimmer’s Mindset as we train for the next race we want to compete in and prepare for all the beauty and hardship it will bring. - The Gymgoer's Mindset
Endless Personal Records by The Dysania Concept (2023) Whether in gyms, wellness centres or health clubs, and whether you train to better your health, become a bodybuilder or prepare your body for a sport, Gymgoers are devoted minds encouraged by improving their inner and outer health. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Gymgoers have that enable them to commit daily to bettering their health through the proposition and accomplishment of objectives regarding stamina, weight and much more. As Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” 1. Persistent Gymgoers must be persistent to achieve their goals. In a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, a health psychologist, Phillippa Lally, discovered that forming a habit takes, on average, two months. Additionally, they uncovered that missing one or two days during the formation process did not truly affect the behaviour change. Hence, missing a day or two while building a habit and messing up the schedule is not enough to disturb your progress but rather an excuse. Regarding this study, Gymgoers are an outstanding example. All Gymgoers had their first day in the gym. They all missed some days during their first few months, but their persistence guided them towards their goal despite the challenges. Similarly, we must understand the difficulties of shaping a new habit or behaviour. But we must also comprehend how common these difficulties are, and through our persistence, we can overcome them and begin to shape the life we want. 2. Accountable Gymgoers lean on their accountability to remain realistic within their chase. Beyond the persistence to commit and deliver on their gym schedule, Gymgoers are true to their decisions. If they can’t make a gym session because of their work or miss a training day because they slept through their alarm, they will hold themselves accountable and find a way to retribute that gym session. The Gymgoer’s accountability enables them to remain realistic when chasing their goals and improving their health, making them honest when assessing their progress. So, as Gymgoers do, we must be accountable for our decisions. Whether we do a double session or miss the session, we must accept and embrace the consequences. Being realistic is the most reliable way to identify where we must make changes. However, accountability doesn’t mean we must punish ourselves every time we make a mistake but instead learn from it and move on. 3. Action-Orientated Gymgoers count on their action-orientated mind to seize every day. Despite planning their sessions, rest days and, probably, meals, Gymgoers do not remain in the passenger seat looking at the map but rather hold the steering wheel and keep perfecting the path as they go on. Their action-orientated mind allows them to learn as they go, discovering how to use new machines, better routines and improved techniques. Therefore, they move beyond the planning and strive for action to chase those results. Like Gymgoers, we must be confident to take risks and start walking the path to our goals instead of remaining in the planning stage until we reach the impossible plan. Plans face hardship along the way, forcing them to change and adapt to new scenarios no matter how solid they seem, so why not just go for it once you know the outline of the way? Gymgoers are minds committed to their cause. They will dedicate a part of every day to keep shaping the road they are walking towards their goal, no matter the setback or obstacle. So, remember to be persistent, especially when forming a habit or behaviour or starting the course towards an objective. And be accountable for the decisions and mistakes you make along the way. Be true to their consequences and do not linger in the punishment seat, but learn from the reaction of your action and keep moving forward; a battle does not win the war. And finally, plan your strategy, analyse your path and prepare to mitigate risks, but do not stay stuck in the planning phase forever. Take action, move forward and adapt to whatever life throws at you. Now, we invite you to adopt The Gymgoer’s Mindset as we all strive to better ourselves every single day, step by step. - The Whale's Mindset
A Shining Tale by Emilio C. Bulos (2019) With 90 different species roaming all the oceans in the world, Whales are some of the largest animals with whom we share Planet Earth. And whereas we are discussing baleen or toothed Whales, they all share similar traits. From Humpback Whales to Blue Whales, the largest animals in the world, they all build a culture and survive together, hunting, caring and communicating with each other. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Whales teach us through their way of life. As Mark Carwardine said, “To have a huge, friendly whale willingly approach your boat and look you straight in the eye is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary experiences on the planet.” 1. Harmony Whales teach us the value of harmony within a community when sharing space. In a piece for Time Magazine, photographer Brian Skerry discussed some of the findings he encountered as he spent years studying the wonders of Whales. In his research, he noticed how Whales that belong to the same species but live in different communities establish different ways to harmonise as a community. Whales build unique dialects, create diet preferences and even host singing competitions. However, beyond these, they pass on ancestral traditions that belong to their community, share them with their family and cultivate relationships with their family and neighbours. Similarly, we must work together and harmonise to benefit from each other’s strengths and reach our desired destination. The harmony built within Whales is the most natural example of the value of our communities and support groups, including our families, friends, mentors and even strangers. 2. Communication Whales teach us the vitality of good communication when working in a team. Beyond establishing dialects in their communities, Whales share a common language. Expressed through singing, Whales whistle, click and use pulsed calls to express their callings and messages. And beyond that, some Whales even assign unique sounds to their calves, meaning they have names! Additionally, when above the surface, Whales can use their fins and tails to make slapping noises and communicate non-verbally. Whales usually use these sounds for hunting. So, like Whales, we must understand the power of communicating and learn how to communicate effectively. We must learn how to address our audience adequately to clearly transmit our ideas and opinions, avoiding misunderstandings and diminishing the time between finding a consensus and taking action. 3. Instinctual Whales teach us the importance of following our instincts to survive. Whales follow warm water when they want to mate and give birth and cold water when they want to hunt, as food is abundant there. Additionally, Whales protect other animals against Killer Whales, and although some suspect it is an altruistic aspect of their personality, it is most likely they protect the animals because their instinct tells them to fight against the hunters. Nevertheless, Whales follow their instincts to survive and keep their species growing. Therefore, trust your gut without disregarding the value of reason and logic. Our instincts are primal to our survival and are essential to why we have overcome so much hardship as a species and evolved into what we are today. Whales are astoundingly intelligent creatures. Their brains have a cell called spindle neurons, which permit them to recognise, reason, remember, communicate, perceive and adapt. And though those, Whales develop their ability to create harmony in a community, communicate brilliantly, and feel and trust their instincts to survive. So, remember the importance of developing relationships with those who surround you. Know the value of speaking your mind clearly and adequately, and trust your instincts when they push something into your mind. Now, we invite you to adopt The Whale’s Mindset as we work to become more noble, receptive and harmonising creatures in a world that needs more of these. - The Ant's Mindset
Ants by The Dysania Concept (2023) Found on every continent except Antarctica, Ants are one of Planet Earth’s most formidable creatures. Their ability to lift between ten and fifty times their weight and the distribution of responsibilities inside their colonies make Ants extraordinary insects that provide exciting insights into animal and social behaviour and traffic patterns. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Ants have that can teach us about the vitality of cooperation within our pursuit towards our goals. As Persian poet Saaid said, “Ants, fighting together, will vanquish the lion.” 1. Teamwork Ants teach us about the value of teamwork within a community. In a colony, all Ants have a specific role. Some Ants defend their home, others feed the larvae, and some even take out the colony’s trash. Beyond those roles, you have the Queen Ant, responsible for laying eggs, and the male Ants, accountable for reproduction. The unity and leadership scheme established by Ants permits them to excel in teamwork, enabling them to survive and evolve their colonies worldwide. Therefore, when we are working within a community, we must always embrace the value of teamwork. Taking on roles and responsibilities, being liable for their completion, and being aware of your position and everyone else’s in a grander strategy are potent tools to conquer your goals. 2. Organisational Skills Ants teach us to organise ourselves to stay on course towards our goal. Beyond the organisational skills displayed in the distribution of roles and responsibilities, Ants demonstrate the importance of being organised when working to survive. Ants prepare food rations, and their colony for winter, and scientists believe they have work shifts, meaning a time to work and sleep. Additionally, when bringing food back to the colony, they establish traffic patterns so there is a way in and out, making their jobs as efficient as possible. These are some examples of how organisation aids Ants in staying on track towards their goal. Similarly, when we have set ourselves on a path, we must know how proper organisation can help us. Developing a clear route, phases of work, and a structured timetable can be handy tools to stay on course. 3. Adaptability Ants teach us to adapt to our environment and grow from its challenges to become our best version. Ants have persisted for over one hundred million years. Ants have survived the extinction of dinosaurs and the Ice Age and have kept evolving. The most recent study estimates that for every human alive, there are over two million Ants, and that has only been possible because of their ability to adapt to all scenarios and climate conditions, and through the self-motivation and discipline their instincts place on them, keep surviving. Hence, no matter the conditions and situation, adapting to it is critical to overcome any challenge. Knowing how to mould your mindset is essential to keep growing, and we must keep growing to keep walking towards our desired destination. Ants are creatures beyond fascination. Their physical, mental and social attributes make them the most meritorious creature on Planet Earth. They are symbols of resilience, strength and, most importantly, cooperation, essential to keep evolving. So, remember to value teamwork, as it creates the space to lean on and excel as a community towards your goal. Also, be organised to develop a clear working line and be as efficient as possible. And finally, learn to adapt to all environments and situations. Having a malleable mind regarding how to approach scenarios and develop ideas is fundamental to keep growing as it will enable lateral thinking no matter where you stand. So, we now invite you to adopt The Ant’s Mindset as we work as a team and cooperate as a community towards our goals and develop our minds to organise and adapt our decisions to take the best steps towards them. - The Astronomer's Mindset
Pillars of Creation (MIRI) by The James Webb Space Telescope Different to the pseudo-scientific divination practices of Astrology, Astronomy is a scientific study that focuses on everything in the universe beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. Using a combination of physics, chemistry and mathematics, it explores the origin, evolution and behaviour of planets, stars, moons, asteroids, nebulae, galaxies and more, and, as time has gone by, humans have slowly developed the knowledge in this field, enabling us to understand the solar system, galaxy and universe in which we truly live. Therefore, Astronomers are paramount to comprehending what exists beyond the human race and Planet Earth’s contents and their relation to us. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Astronomers have that permit them to learn about what was before, what is now and what will be beyond our atmosphere. As scientist Carl Sagan explained, “It’s been said that astronomy is humbling and, might I add, a character-building experience.” 1. Curious Astronomers rely on their curiosity to ignite questions and spark research. Astronomers deal with the unknown, and that thrills them. Black holes, unimagined new planets and nebulae are some aspects they examine. Hence, their curiosity is paramount to keep their need to discover more about the unknown alive. The need to comprehend what lies beyond our atmosphere makes their minds race and ignite questions that will fuel upcoming research. Therefore, we must also find something that fuels our curiosity. Astronomers dedicate their lives to their field because their passion for their field of study births their curiosity. So, find something that calls to you, use your curiosity, and do not stop asking questions that lead you to the answers you seek. 2. Investigative Astronomers must be investigative to make discoveries through their research. After their curiosity has ignited questions and oriented them towards research, they must transform that curiosity into an investigative sense. The new questions and research must live in their minds, inciting new ideas and helping them understand the results in front of them. Similarly, once curiosity has fueled our minds, we must transform it into an investigative experience. We must become independent thinkers to analyse, understand and share these thoughts so we can, consequently, share them collectively to inspire each other and find a consensus. We must investigate and explore what we are pursuing. 3. Observational Skills Astronomers lean on their observational skills to spot answers and explanations. Within the process of investigation, Astronomers must be observant. Whether they are analysing data, looking at new images or figuring out a mathematical problem, their ability to observe beyond the general aspect of the situation and dive into the details enables them to find critical insights and conclusions. Their observational skills permit them to see beyond what the ordinary eye can, guiding them towards the answers their curiosity desires. So, once investigating what your curiosity has sparked, be observant, look for details and be aware of both the macro and micro aspects of the path you’ve embarked on. Astronomers are dedicated and committed minds. Their devotion to understanding the unknown to bring some clarity to the scientific community and the general population is extraordinary, and to reach such deviation, one must understand how they behave. So, remember to trust your curiosity as it will show what path calls your mind. Consequently, transform that curiosity into an investigative sense, making you embark on a route to answer those questions genuinely. And finally, remember the value of being observant during the process. When trying to find answers to your questions, observing the details and more prominent traits and being aware of the micro and macro picture of the research is vital to finding authentic discoveries. Now, we invite you to adopt The Astronomer’s Mindset as we all find and devote our minds to the questions that haunt us and convert that devotion into true-to-life and valuable results. - The Industrial Designer's Mindset
Tools To Bring Life by The Dysania Concept (2023) Industrial Designers combine art, engineering and business to make everyday products. To develop these, they focus on their function, aesthetics, production costs and usability, making our lives, through their ideas, simpler, more efficient and more beautiful. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Industrial Designers have that enable them to create the products we use throughout our lives. As Tucker Viemister said, “A man-made thing that produces pleasure and criticism by somehow taping into the order of the universe is beautiful. Making beautiful things makes our lives worthwhile. (...) From a pragmatic point of view, for something to be beautiful, it has to work. In order to make this idea clearer, I have combined the ideas of beauty and function into one word: Beautility.” 1. Problem-Solving Industrial Designers rely on their problem-solving ability to establish a working line. After being commissioned or handed a brief, Industrial Designers must begin their research and start sketching ideas for the product their client has asked them to design. Therefore, during this process and the following prototype and testing phases, Industrial Designers use their problem-solving skills to anticipate issues, develop alternatives and implement solutions. In a field where creativity and development work in stages, being aware of challenges and solving them is vital. Therefore, when working to bring an idea to life, be mindful of the upcoming challenges and hardships to establish the best working line and know how to deal with any problems that might arise throughout the path. 2. Innovation Industrial Designers count on their innovation to find new paths towards their products. Because clients mainly task them with developing wholly new or partially new products, Industrial Designers must have an innovative and creative mind to integrate what already exists with whatever they need to create to build the perfect blend to bring their idea to life. Between traditional and new techniques, the development of technology and the disrupting minds surrounding the field, Industrial Designers must be innovative to sharpen their path towards materialising their ideas. So, after establishing the most suitable working line, know the importance of innovating throughout the process. Integrating your innovative ideas with existing ones is often the perfect start towards your desired destination. 3. Self-Learning Industrial Designers must be self-learners to succeed in an ever-changing world. Stop learning is never an option in a role where interpersonal, analytical, mechanical, creative and computer skills are needed. Hence, Industrial Designers always remain open to new ideas and resources to better the quality of attention they give to their clients and their knowledge regarding all aspects of their creation process and new emerging technology. Similarly, we must never stop being students of the world. Learning about new technology, resources, and skills will always do us good when pursuing a goal, as these will sharpen our minds and help us make better decisions by increasing the pool of knowledge available to us. Industrial Designers are versatile minds. Their ability to implement their soft and hard skills to any type of brief or request done by a client reinforces the importance of their role in making our lives simple and increasing their beautility. So, remember the importance of developing your problem-solving skills, as problems are present no matter what you are chasing, and knowing how to anticipate and solve them is vital to smoothen the process you’re walking through. Also, be innovative when developing an idea. Think beyond the boundaries in your mind, blend reality with your imagination and integrate them to perfect your concept. And finally, never stop learning. Life has endless lessons, so why should we ever say we’ve had enough of them? Now, we invite you to adopt The Industrial Designer’s Mindset as we all work to make our lives simpler and more beautiful.
