Different to the pseudo-scientific divination practices of Astrology, Astronomy is a scientific study that focuses on everything in the universe beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. Using a combination of physics, chemistry and mathematics, it explores the origin, evolution and behaviour of planets, stars, moons, asteroids, nebulae, galaxies and more, and, as time has gone by, humans have slowly developed the knowledge in this field, enabling us to understand the solar system, galaxy and universe in which we truly live. Therefore, Astronomers are paramount to comprehending what exists beyond the human race and Planet Earth’s contents and their relation to us. So, in this edition of The Mindsets, we’ll explore the qualities, virtues and skills Astronomers have that permit them to learn about what was before, what is now and what will be beyond our atmosphere. As scientist Carl Sagan explained, “It’s been said that astronomy is humbling and, might I add, a character-building experience.”
1. Curious
Astronomers rely on their curiosity to ignite questions and spark research. Astronomers deal with the unknown, and that thrills them. Black holes, unimagined new planets and nebulae are some aspects they examine. Hence, their curiosity is paramount to keep their need to discover more about the unknown alive. The need to comprehend what lies beyond our atmosphere makes their minds race and ignite questions that will fuel upcoming research. Therefore, we must also find something that fuels our curiosity. Astronomers dedicate their lives to their field because their passion for their field of study births their curiosity. So, find something that calls to you, use your curiosity, and do not stop asking questions that lead you to the answers you seek.
2. Investigative
Astronomers must be investigative to make discoveries through their research. After their curiosity has ignited questions and oriented them towards research, they must transform that curiosity into an investigative sense. The new questions and research must live in their minds, inciting new ideas and helping them understand the results in front of them. Similarly, once curiosity has fueled our minds, we must transform it into an investigative experience. We must become independent thinkers to analyse, understand and share these thoughts so we can, consequently, share them collectively to inspire each other and find a consensus. We must investigate and explore what we are pursuing.
3. Observational Skills
Astronomers lean on their observational skills to spot answers and explanations. Within the process of investigation, Astronomers must be observant. Whether they are analysing data, looking at new images or figuring out a mathematical problem, their ability to observe beyond the general aspect of the situation and dive into the details enables them to find critical insights and conclusions. Their observational skills permit them to see beyond what the ordinary eye can, guiding them towards the answers their curiosity desires. So, once investigating what your curiosity has sparked, be observant, look for details and be aware of both the macro and micro aspects of the path you’ve embarked on.
Astronomers are dedicated and committed minds. Their devotion to understanding the unknown to bring some clarity to the scientific community and the general population is extraordinary, and to reach such deviation, one must understand how they behave. So, remember to trust your curiosity as it will show what path calls your mind. Consequently, transform that curiosity into an investigative sense, making you embark on a route to answer those questions genuinely. And finally, remember the value of being observant during the process. When trying to find answers to your questions, observing the details and more prominent traits and being aware of the micro and macro picture of the research is vital to finding authentic discoveries. Now, we invite you to adopt The Astronomer’s Mindset as we all find and devote our minds to the questions that haunt us and convert that devotion into true-to-life and valuable results.
